KGB TO PRESIDENT

KGB TO PRESIDENT

                    Valdimir Putin

The current president of Russia is Vladimir Putin. Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad (now known as Saint Petersburg). He grew up in a communal apartment shared by multiple families, and his father worked as a factory foreman.

Putin graduated from Leningrad State University in 1975 with a law degree. He then joined the KGB, the Soviet Union's security agency, and served as a foreign intelligence officer in East Germany for several years. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Putin entered politics and rose to prominence quickly.

He was appointed as the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor organization to the KGB, in 1998. The following year, he was appointed as prime minister by then-President Boris Yeltsin. When Yeltsin resigned on December 31, 1999, Putin became the acting president of Russia.

Putin was then elected president in 2000, and he served two consecutive terms until 2008. During his time in office, Putin implemented policies aimed at boosting the Russian economy and strengthening its military. He also oversaw a crackdown on political opposition and independent media.

After reaching his term limit, Putin became prime minister under his handpicked successor, Dmitry Medvedev. Putin returned to the presidency in 2012 after winning the election with over 60% of the vote. He was reelected in 2018, and his current term is set to end in 2024.

Throughout his time in office, Putin has been a controversial figure both domestically and internationally. He has been accused of suppressing political opposition and dissent, as well as meddling in foreign elections and conflicts. However, he also maintains a significant base of support within Russia, particularly among those who credit him with restoring the country's status as a global power.
